(Back to Colposcopy)

Most women experience no significant problems following colposcopy and biopsy. Occasionally there may be complications as with any surgical procedure. Please read the following information to help you through the next few days.

1. Bleeding/Discharge - It is normal to have some spotting after colposcopy. This should stop after about 12 hours. It is also normal to have a blackish discharge. During the biopsy, medicine is used to control bleeding. As this medicine mixes with blood, it forms a dark and grainy discharge, which is passed over the next two to three days. This discharge does not have a bad odor. Any prolonged bright red bleeding is not usual and you should call us right away. Call us if you feel your discharge is not normal.

2. Infection - Occasionally the cervix will become infected after biopsy. This will usually take one to three days to develop after the procedure. Infection may show up as a thick cloudy vaginal discharge that will often have a bad odor, pain in the vagina or the low pelvic area, fever or chills. Should you develop any of these symptoms please call us.

3. Pelvic Pain - During and immediately following cervical biopsy some women notice menstrual-like cramps. These are usually gone by the day following the biopsy and ibuprofen may be very helpful: 200 to 800 mg every 6 to 8 hours with food. Call us for any persistent pain.

4. Intercourse - Normally the cervix and vagina heal quickly after a small biopsy. To allow healing to occur quickly and to resist infection, please do not have intercourse, use tampons or douche for 7 days following the biopsy.

We will call you with the biopsy results within 5 days. Please keep us informed of your current phone number and address so we can follow up with you. Remember, colposcopy and biopsy is not a treatment for your condition and it will be necessary that you return to the office for definitive treatment or recommendations for referral.
